Is Your Doctor Manipulating You?

Manipulation from your mom: bad.
Manipulation from your Osteopath: good.

If your doctor is a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, then we hope he or she is manipulating you in all the best possible ways.

At Columbia Integrative Health, we recently welcomed, Clark Butler, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine to the team. While we think he is pretty much the best thing since color TV, what a DO actually does is a much under-informed area for the general public. So buckle up because in the next two minutes I’m going to give you a speedy overview of what a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine does and how they can help YOU live your most vibrant life.

MDs and DOs are both board certified physicians who go through 4 years of medical school that focuses on treating illness and injury through medication, surgery, and other various treatments. This is what we know as “western medicine”.

In addition to their training in western medicine, DOs spend years mastering hands-on adjustment techniques known as osteopathic manual manipulation (OMM) which is exactly what it sounds likehey use their hands to apply gentle pressure and movement to areas of bodily dysfunction to relieve joint pain, headaches, trigger points, and muscle stiffness to name just a few.

This healing technique has continued to gain credence and popularity since its formal establishment in 1874. But you don’t need to read hours of medical studies to see why osteopathic manipulation works. If you’ve ever experienced asymmetry or tightness in your body, you know how it can cause a whole chain reaction of disfunction. Osteopathic medicine holds that harmony between structure and function are essential to health.

If you are suffering from any of the following conditions, and are seeking a holistic and non-invasive solution, we can help.

  • Headache
  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Hip pain
  • Arthritis
  • Muscle pain and stiffness

BONUS FUN FACT:
The very first school of osteopathic medicine, ATSU, was founded in Kirksville, Missouri in 1892. And it happens to be where Dr. Butler went to medical school!
